My plight with mosquitoes just got fashionable!

My ordeal with mosquitoes, the little blood-thirsty cretins, during my travels in South America have been well documented here on my blog. As has my effort to use tech to repel and destroy them from this planet – well maybe not the latter but certainly repel them away from me.

Just today I came across a post from Gizmodo, it came with the tagline “Designer tees repel mosquitos while keeping you En Vogue” – well hello! My previous fashion efforts have only included a big old wrist band, combined with a sheik ankle band – not hot! So as you can imagine the words “designer” “en vogue” and of course “repel” all appealed to my plight.

I don’t do new years resolutions, but if there’s tech involved…

Prompted by a trip to the beach yesterday I have decided to get fit, not fit like I want to be able to run a marathon…I mean fit like looking slimmer and more toned! Keeping it real yo. These Brazilian ladies are pretty hot and they have inspired me.

I downloaded an app a few months ago with the good intentions of using it, but never letting it see the light of day, to which I have re-installed on my iPhone 3G. It is called Nike Training Club and is aimed at women (from what I can see) and better yet it is free.

My war with mosquitos

the Culicidae

Traveling is aces and delivers many an amazing experience along the many routes you take, however it often comes with a slight pain – mosquitos. Those little delights that leave an itchy, red and sometimes bulbous lump on your body, which become the centre of your universe while they co-exist your skin.

My big adventure – Vaccinations!! :-/

Those of you that know me well will be all too aware of my relocation rapidly approaching, yes I’m upping sticks and seeing what the world has to offer me. Starting my journey in Argentina.

There are many things that I have had to consider before leaving, not least of all work! I have had to say a very sad goodbye to my great job, which I am gutted about, but who knows what the future holds with paths bound to cross at some point. I have also needed to tie up loose ends including selling my car, my iPhone (sobs) and various other bits I won’t be needing/can’t take with me – all via largely through  Gumtree. But, it’ll all be more then worth it when I arrive and see a certain someones face.

Cuba launches world’s first vaccine against lung cancer

Yes, that headline got my attention too! James Holland shared this link on Facebook this afternoon and I went straight on over to find out more. There are only a few articles online about this, but below is what I have found so far. Cancer unfortunately, affects one in three of us and it is said that pretty much everyone has been affected by the disease in one or another – be it a family member, friend or themselves. This makes any advances in research, extremely important.

A Summer of Science on the South Bank …

Last night I had the great pleasure of attending the Royal Society’s Summer of Science event on the South Bank. The trip came with the added bonus of a few work colleagues for a ‘school trip’ themed evening … mega fun. For those of you that don’t know I come from a science background and studied Ecology at university and so science holds a special place in my heart … when linked with new technology and cider – well it is a no brainer of full WIN! I would highly recommend going along whether as a group of friends or a family day out, the event is a must see if you are a fan of tech or science. I wanted to tell you a little bit about some of the cool things on show and hope that you manage to go and take a look for yourself.

The modern day Jetsons – what could the family of 2062 really look like?

When I was a littlun one of my favourite cartoons was the Jetsons, I loved all the gadgets and gizmos that surrounded their lives and dreamed that one day I might be able to try them out. Many of which have become a reality now, alright so maybe we don’t have flying cars (yet!), but who needs them. I’m talking mobile phones, talking computers, robots (well nearly, not quite Rosie the maid but … see here), machines communicating with each other independently of humans (M2M) and much more. Technology is advancing at such an awesome rate and recently I was introduced to this awesome video of an augmented reality kitchen of the future … very cool stuff huh!
